Exploring the Bos en Dijkroute

The Bos en Dijkroute is a marked circular walk on the Purmerringdijk. You walk along urban green areas and through the border area of the open polder and the dense Purmerbos. During the walk you can see how the city has changed again due to the rapid growth at the end of the last century.

On the east side of the city you will find the Purmerbos: a large green lung. The botanical garden'De Dwarsgouw\\\' and Het Purmerbos have many plant and bird species. In the Purmerbos, for example, you will find different tree species: poplars, ash trees, oak trees and beech trees. This vegetation attracts many songbirds and insects to the area.

Bird cherry, linden, hornbeam, willow and alder grow here and there along the route. The narrower ditches are allowed to grow over with water and marsh plants. In some places, salt-loving plants such as sea aster can be seen. The part along the dike has been excavated and now mainly consists of wet grass and reed land with many reed orchids. These beautiful orchids can color the field purple.
