Description
The Trambaanroute is a circular walk on the former railway of the Waterlandse tram towards Monnickendam. You also walk past new buildings in Waterland style, drained lakes and along the Volgermeer. Large parts of Waterland-Oost are managed by Staatsbosbeheer.
The history of Broek in Waterland
The farmers outside the reserve areas help with the management of nature. The moist grasslands are visited by many meadow birds in the spring. Broek in Waterland originated as a swamp or Broek village. After the reclamation of the peat, the inhabitants moved to the higher levees of the river De Leet. Farmland became pasture. In the Golden Age, wealthy merchants from Amsterdam settled in Broek in Waterland. Simple residences became colorful show houses. All kinds of colors were used to decorate the buildings. Later, prosperity declined and the residents started using the cheaper gray primer as a finishing layer.
