This area was created ten thousand years ago, during the Ice Age. Around the beginning of the common era, a branch of the Rhine ran here: the Oer-IJ. De Kil is a remnant of this. The area was inhabited long ago, and traces of it can still be found in the subsurface. The route runs along cultural-historical roads and the farmland path between Beverwijk, Heemskerk and Assendelft. This open polder landscape is a true bird paradise for meadow birds. Birds such as the godwit and the redshank breed here in the spring. Dogs are not allowed on the farmland path. The path is closed between March and mid-June, then take the route over the Hoogedijk. The banks of the De Kil watercourse are also an attractive habitat for frogs, toads, salamanders and shrews.
