This walking route runs on the edge of the bird-rich Westwouderpolder along the Alkmaarder and Uitgeestermeer. This region is a typical peat meadow area. The approximately 150 inhabitants of the peat polder came to live on an island in the 17th century by digging the Markervaart. A large part of the polder is now a nature reserve of Staatsbosbeheer where meadow birds such as the black-tailed godwit, redshank and rare ruff breed in large numbers. This means that unfortunately dogs are not allowed. During the walk you can also find many vulnerable plant species, such as orchids and sundew.
