Description

This route takes you through the polder between Uitgeest and Akersloot. You also walk a bit along the Alkmaarder and Uitgeestermeer. You used to find many farm fields here, which were also called'ghosts\\\'. That's where the names of the surrounding places come from.

On the road through peatlands
The first part of this route leads to the hamlet of Groot Dorregeest and further to Klein Dorregeest. Along the way you will become acquainted with the peat meadows that are so typical for this region with grass quays, meadows, wide reed beds along the water and cows grazing. After walking about 2 kilometers you can take a look at the Dorregeest Mill. This mill was built here in 1896 as a successor to an earlier mill that burned down due to a lightning strike. In this area you will also find all kinds of special plant species such as orchids and sundew and numerous birds. From meadow birds such as the black-tailed godwit, redshank, ruff and lapwing to reed and water birds such as widgeons, bitterns, bluethroats and bearded males.

Along the water
From Klein Dorregeest you walk back to the starting point of the route along the Alkmaarder and Uitgeestermeer. This lake is widely used by water sports enthusiasts, so there is plenty to see here. Enjoy the view here while walking.

Practical information
This route is not accessible during the breeding season of the meadow birds from 1 April to 1 July. The rest of the year you can enjoy all the natural beauty here. Dogs are also not allowed on this route, to ensure that the many birds are not startled here.
