Quiet, quieter, Schiermonnikoog

Schiermonnikoog is praised for its tranquility and varied nature. It is not for nothing that the entire Wadden Island has the status of National Park. With this walking route you will discover all the special places on Schiermonnikoog. The dunes have different microclimates. The deeper you walk into them, the different the landscape looks. You can see more than a hundred plant species on one walk - unique for such a small area. Via a long branch you walk through the Oosterkwelder to the eastern tip of the island. A special area, which has limited access in the spring due to the breeding season. Throughout the year, more than 300 bird species can be found on the island, so bring your binoculars. The route also leads you through coniferous and deciduous forests. On the west side you can see how the trees are shaved bald by the strong salty sea wind and grow crooked, in an easterly direction. There is only one village on this Wadden island: Schiermonnikoog. It is a pleasure to wander through it, because partly thanks to the beautiful commander's houses, Schiermonnikoog has a protected village view. You also pass the Schleidorp, the former radar station of the Germans during World War II. You start and end the 47-kilometer route in the harbor.
