Walking through the Veluwe with Jacobus Craandijk

An endless day in nature Woods, woods and more woods - and of course heathland: that's what the Veluwe has to offer. During this route you mainly walk through the Leuvenumse Bos. This varied forest consists of deciduous and coniferous trees and is intersected by the Leuvenumsche Beek. There are many wild animals, such as boars, badgers and red deer. Dead wood may remain, so that the forest provides sufficient food for insects - and therefore for birds. You walk here through the green wilderness of the Netherlands. During your walk you will visit the old hamlets of Leuvenum and Staverden. There is a castle in both hamlets, although you have to make a small detour in Leuvenum to see the stately building. Staverden was granted city rights at the end of the thirteenth century and is therefore one of the smallest cities in the world. Just before Ermelo you walk across the vast Ermelose Heide. Nowadays mainly Veluwe heath sheep march here, but there was once a marching camp that could accommodate about 5000 Roman legionnaires. The route leads you along the markings of the partly restored Roman defensive walls. The route starts in Hierden and ends at Station Ermelo.
