Under the eye of the Brandaris

This walk takes you through the landscape of Terschelling. This Wadden Island consists of almost eighty percent natural dune landscape and salt marshes. The cranberry grows in the wet dune valleys, and along the inner dune edge you will see many alder hedges. When you walk through the dunes, all you hear are the birds and the crackling of the shell path under your feet. How different is this on the north side of the island where the North Sea crashes its waves on the beach. The route also runs through some forests, such as the Formerumerbos and the Hoornse Bos. A mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees grow in these forests. The Hoornse Bos is located just behind the foredune: along the northern edge you will see many trees that are affected by the salty sea wind. The route takes you close to a number of viewpoints. Near the village of West is the highest point on the island: the almost 32 meter high Kaapsduin. You pass through charming villages such as West, Midsland and Hoorn. Here you will find many characteristic buildings, such as the symbol for Terschelling: the almost 55 meter high Brandaris, the oldest lighthouse (1594) in the Netherlands.
