A day through the Texel countryside

This walk takes you along the Texel dunes, along a piece of Wadden beach and through the Texel meadow landscape with its characteristic white-green farmhouses and many garden walls. The garden walls were built in the course of the seventeenth century by stacking sod on top of each other, so that the plots of sheep pastures were separated from each other. Until that period, the herd of different owners simply mixed together. During your walk you will also see some typical sheep barns, or sheep sheds. They are thatched wooden sheds, the sloping side of which faces the prevailing west wind. Contrary to what the name suggests, they were used to store tools and feed. In addition to sheep, you can also see meadow birds such as partridges in the grasslands. The walk takes you along the foot of the Hoge Berg, the boulder clay hill that, at fifteen meters, forms the highest point on the island. If you feel like it, you can walk up the hill and enjoy a wide view of Texel and the water. A wonderful moment for a picnic. Of course, the route also takes you through the charming village of Den Hoorn, of which the striking fifteenth-century church is the figurehead.
