The icing on the cake

Schouwen-Duivenland is rich in beaches, dunes and forests. There are many charming villages in the pleasant polder land. This route takes you to the west corner of this island. You walk through Westerschouwen forestry, the largest forest in Zeeland. Here, for example, the wild honeysuckle blooms, which spreads its perfume after a rain shower. Foxes and deer hide in the thickets, especially at dusk they carefully emerge. Everywhere you hear the surf of the sea. You can also walk between the trees at Slot Haamstede, this is the only deciduous forest on the island. The keep of the castle dates from the thirteenth century. In the Zeepeduinen you walk through quiet dune valleys and barren sand dunes. The last part of the route you walk through the picturesque villages of Burgh and Haamstede. Burgh originated from a ring rampart that was raised against the Vikings at the end of the ninth century. A footpath leads from the Kerkstraat to the burg; part of the former rampart has been reconstructed.
