Polder country
The route starts in Hallumerhoek. Here you immediately enter the characteristic Frisian polders of vast grasslands and ditches. This walk takes you through the cultural landscape of north-east Friesland. Here you walk through a beautiful old polder land that was partly shaped by the hard work of the Frisians in their battle against the sea. Just like their Groningen neighbours, they made artificial hills, so-called terps. Churches and entire neighbourhoods were built on and along these terps.
Oldbildtzijl
You walk in the shelter of the Zeedijk - walk up at junction 13 or 34 for a beautiful view of the polder outside the dike with the Wadden Sea behind it. In clear weather you can see Ameland. Inland you can see the villages and hamlets on your route. You also walk through Oudebildtzijl, which enjoys a protected village view. Here you can admire the striking Julianakerk from 1806 - a bell was hung in the tower after the birth of Princess Juliana in 1909.
