This walk takes you through De Marne, a historic region in the northwest of Groningen. Here you walk through a beautiful old polder land that was partly shaped by the diligent work of the people of Groningen in their fight against the sea. The sea may be tamed, but in this open landscape the wind still has free rein, so you can get a breath of fresh air here. The peace in the polder and the rhythm of your steps are the ideal recipe to completely clear your head. This way you pay more attention to the rich history that can be found in this area. In Ulrum, for example, you walk through the park where the Asingaborg stood on a mound from 1500 to 1809. On the other mound in this town is a twelfth-century church. You will also pass through Panser, a hamlet consisting of two old farms. On the mound in Niekerk you walk past a thirteenth-century church that was restored in the seventeenth century with proceeds from the Silver Fleet.
