Forestry Gieten-Borger is located far away from cities and highways, in the rolling landscape of the Hondsrug. Follow the orange route markers for a brisk, varied walk through the vast forests in this area.
A typical Drenthe landscape
The route takes you past all elements of the typical Drenthe landscape. You walk on cobbled roads and heaths, along stately beech avenues and tranquil mist-shrouded fens where plants such as heather, cranberry and peat fluff grow. Hidden between the greenery, the ancient burial mounds and dolmens rest. It's really quiet here.
Up the trails
Along the way you cannot miss the typical Drenthe boulder paths. In the 1930s, the boulders of these paths came to the surface during reclamations. They were used locally to pave the dirt roads. Laying these roads was an art in itself: the large boulders lie along the side and the smaller stones in the middle of the road. The larger boulders were placed on the edge of a forest section and numbered, the cornerstones. These stones were used, for example, to map the plant and animal species and sometimes still to set out walking routes. You will find them along the route. So keep your eyes open.
Outdoor center Boomkroonpad
The walk starts and ends at Buitencentrum Boomkroonpad. This is the perfect base for a fun day outdoors. From here you can follow many routes and you can participate in all kinds of activities. In the associated shop you will find regional products and gift items. Highly recommended in this area is the Boomkroonpad that you can follow from the outdoor center.
