There are beautiful nature reserves and beautiful old villages around the Scheldt. This route introduces you to the rolling region east of the river in East Flanders. You pass through villages such as Sint-Kornelis-Horebeke and Sint-Blasius-Boekel. This area will be known to cycling enthusiasts from Flemish cycling classics such as the Tour of Flanders. The winding cobblestone lanes, hills and sunken roads form a beautiful backdrop for every cyclist to ride through. There is something new to discover behind every corner: enchanting village views, the many chapels and other religious heritage and numerous wind and water mills. Gourmands will also feel right at home thanks to the delicious regional products.
In Gavere you cross the Scheldt and continue upstream on the dike. Originally, the Scheldt was a strongly winding river. As early as the eighteenth century, meanders were cut off, in the twentieth century this often happened when the Scheldt was straightened. The cut-off Scheldt meanders have been preserved and now form beautiful nature reserves with a special fauna and flora. For example, you drive along the Heurnemeersen, a reserve of cut-off river meanders, forests, grasslands and marsh vegetation. In the old meander swan flower, marsh marigold and hollow pipe grow. For example, the open areas are attractive resting places for migratory birds. Birds such as the oriole, reed bunting and bluethroat also breed here.
