Description

Poperinge and the surrounding area is known for the hop cultivation that takes place there. No less than three-quarters of the national hop cultivation is harvested here. Furthermore, the cloth industry and the First World War also had a lot of influence on Poperinge and the surrounding area of the city. Get to know this beautiful area from your bike.

The Saint Sixtus Abbey
The start and end point of this route is a little outside of Poperinge. From here you cycle straight through Poperinge to the Sint Sixtus Abbey in West Vleteringen. This abbey belongs to the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, also known as the Trappists. Trappist beer is brewed in this abbey and that is also what the abbey is known for. So you've come to the right place if you like abbey beer. You will also find several British military cemeteries in the region. The Talbot House, the former meeting center for British soldiers, still stands here and the death row and the execution pole at the town hall are reminders of the wartime.

National Hop Museum the City Scale
In the center of Poperinge you can take a look at the National Hop Museum de Stadsscale. Here you can learn more about hop cultivation in Poperinge from the thirteenth century. Here you will find an exhibition spread over four floors in which you learn all about hops. You can of course also enjoy a beer here.
