Description

Veenhuizen is a former mining village where you can visit the Prison Museum and many monuments. In the countryside you drive through the Fochteloërveen, one of the best preserved high moor areas in the Netherlands.

Veenhuizen
You can relax your legs on a car-free road, while you cycle past meadows and through the Frisian village of Fochteloo. After a while you drive into Veenhuizen, a Drenthe village that until 1981 was only accessible to prison employees. You can see here, among other things, a domed church from 1826.

Fochteloerveen
You then drive through the Fochteloërveen, a nature reserve consisting of forest, heathland, fens and raised moors. The fact that this area has preserved its old character is mainly due to chance: the nature reserve is relatively isolated on the border of Drenthe and Friesland. You will experience a wonderfully refreshing silence here.
