Stake bean route

The Stakbean route is a beautiful, varied cycling route over a length of 34 kilometers. It takes you past farmland and historic farms in and around Hegelsom, Meterik and Horst. The small-scale cultivation of pole beans (also called pole beans) takes place between May and September. In the winter months, the cultivation of this is therefore not visible! Nevertheless, this cycle route is highly recommended, as it takes you past many special and beautiful places. The stake bean The stake bean, also called pole bean, is a vine that grows along stakes (sticks) or rope. The pole bean requires a sheltered place to grow and dry, warm soil. The plant takes nitrogen from the air instead of the soil. Pole bean cultivation has therefore flourished in our region thanks to the dry sandy soils and the manure from chicken farming. Pole bean cultivation is very labour-intensive. This suited our region with large horticultural families. Many hands made light work. When picking the green pods was no longer profitable, the pole bean cultivation around Hegelsom specialized in the export of seed beans to all corners of the world. The pole bean's relatively short growing season runs from May to September. A lot of work has to be done in those five months. A lot is still done by hand. Due to the small-scale cultivation, you will still find many pole beans around the villages.
