National Park Weerribben - Wieden

Trees, water, birds and endless reed beds: nature in the Weerribben looks unspoiled. But appearances can be deceiving, because every meter of soil here is man-made. Over three centuries, the inhabitants excavated the peat to make peat. The shovel thus changed the landscape into a swampy swamp area where narrow strips of land and water alternate. An ancient cultural landscape of swamp forests, hay meadows, water, peat villages, blooming orchids and lots of reeds. A large, green maze where you can wander endlessly. That's the Weerribben. Cycle along the water, with the singing of reed warblers and reed warblers from the reeds. Mute swans and purple herons fly through the air, some chatter in the water can be an otter!
