Uithuizen is the main town of the municipality of Eemsmond. The name derives from Huizen uit de Wierde (Houses from the Wierde), the first houses built not on, but next to, the Brunwerd mound. Despite its relatively small size, with only 5,200 inhabitants, Uithuizen boasts a number of beautiful sights and numerous national monuments, including the best-preserved borg (fortress) in the Groningen countryside. The route takes you through the former Uithuizerpolder water board. The water board had no drainage system and pumped its water through a sluice: the Uithuizerpomp (Exhaust Pump) on the Oostpolder. The route begins and ends at Hotel Ekamper. This charming hotel is located in one of the smallest villages in Groningen, just below Roodeschool. The hotel is nestled in a beautiful landscape with impressive farms and surprising views.
