Smuggling round Chaam, Alphen and Baarle

You drive straight through the quiet border area near Belgium to Chaam, also a beautiful old village. Between Chaam and Alphen the route takes you through the Chaam forests. The area consists of pine forests with beautiful views of heathlands and fens. In the outskirts of Baarle you will still find many sandy paths that served as smuggling routes. The border runs close to here and in Baarle even criss-cross through the village: a great smuggling area in the post-war period. Butter was hidden under the clothing of ladies on bicycles. But the commissioners were not crazy either: they kindly invited the ladies to take a seat near a well-heated stove...!
