Description

The first part of the cycle route leads you to the Oosterschelde coast. It has long been an arm of the river, which is why you will find both fresh and salt water. The construction of the first Delta Works gave the Oosterschelde a unique flora and fauna, including seals and porpoises. Another attraction is the't Hert mill in Ellemeet. This ground sailor was placed in 1748 to grind grain. You will also pass Haamstede Castle, which has its origins in the thirteenth century. In 1525 the castle was almost completely destroyed by fire, which meant that the castle had to be rebuilt. The estate belonging to the castle contains the only deciduous forest in Schouwen-Duivenland.
