Jalhay and the surrounding villages
The starting point of this route is on the outskirts of Jalhay. The municipality of Jalhay in the Ardennes is seen as the gateway to the High Fens. This municipality is best known for the beautiful nature reserves that surround it. Life in Jalhay and the surrounding villages such as Herbiester and Charneux is pleasant. Be sure to spend some time here if you want to experience the calm atmosphere of these villages. Then it's time to set course for the Lac de La Gileppe. The original dam wall was the oldest concrete dam wall in Europe and was intended to supply usable water for the textile industry.
The dam wall
The current dam wall is decorated with a large sandstone lion facing the border with former Prussia. The complex was opened by King Leopold on July 28, 1878. Today the lake provides drinking water.
