Tour of Brunssummerheide and Anstelvallei

Along the green outskirts of Heerlen, you cycle to the Brunssummerheide. This heathland is man-made. You wouldn't guess it, but the area around the visitor center was built on a former landfill. A flock of Schoonbeek sheep lives in the hilly landscape. You cycle back along the banks of the Cranenweyer, a reservoir in the Anstel Valley (also called the Anstelerbeek Valley) in Kerkrade. The Anstelerbeek flows through a valley with steep slopes, where Roman villas once stood. You'll now find a diverse hillside forest. There are also two watermills (Ham Mill and Brug Mill), GaiaZOO, Erenstein Castle, the Nieuw Erenstein castle farm, and the Klarenanstel farm. A fascinating area! A beautiful walking area has been created around the reservoir.
