Description

The LF 2 City Route links several Dutch and Flemish cities. You cycle from Amsterdam to Brussels in 337 km. The culture, architecture and bustle of the major Dutch and Flemish cities alternate with the tranquility of typical Dutch and Flemish landscapes in this international route. The cities are very easy to visit by bicycle. You have full mobility, don't have to wait in traffic anywhere and can park anywhere. This sporty tour is an absolute must for city trip enthusiasts. The LF 2 City Route through Flanders (+/- 150 km) connects the northern (LF 5) and the southern (LF 6) branch of the Flanders Cycling Route and therefore offers the opportunity to cycle smaller loops in Flanders. Lovers of historic cities can reach Ghent and Bruges, but also Lier, Maaseik and Tongeren, via the connection to the Flanders cycle route. Take a cycling tour from centuries-old village chapels and farms to Gothic cathedrals and 19th century city palaces. From north to south: The route starts in the heart of Amsterdam and runs through the Green Heart of Holland south to Rotterdam, or via the alternative route to Gouda. After Roosendaal you cross the Dutch-Belgian border in Huybergen. You cycle towards Antwerp through the Kalmthoutse Heide State Nature Reserve. The route takes you along the Scheldt quays to the historic-tourist heart of the city. In the Rupel region, old brickworks and useless chimneys are the silent witnesses of a harsh industrial past. Mechelen is cycled along the Dijle bank towards the city center until under the tower of St. Rumbold's Cathedral. You can spot storks at the Plankendael zoo along the Leuvense Vaart. It goes to Leuven via the Dyle Canal. Hopefully, like all the others on the City Route, you have not calculated this stage too broadly. It would be a shame not to be able to stop at the University Hall and the late Gothic town hall and St. Peter's Church. Then it goes over the Brabant hills and through the vast Zonien Forest to the center of Brussels. Given the short distances between the cities and the proximity of stations along the route, a train-bicycle combination is easy to realize. For example, if you leave Mechelen station at the back, you will immediately arrive on the City Route. Signage on the ground in the Brussels Region is not permitted for the time being. For this reason, depending on your driving direction, the signage of the LF 2 City Route on Flemish soil begins or ends in the area of the Vossemvijver to the (north) east of Tervuren. Linked routes The junction with the Dutch part of the LF 2 City Route is located on the Belgian-Dutch border in the Essen area. Between Merksem and the Sint Annatunnel (Antwerp), the LF 2 City Route overlaps with the LF 51 Kempen Route. Between Schelle and Boom there is overlap with the LF 5, northern arm of the Flanders Cycling Route. And between Heverlee and Leefdal, south of Leuven, with the LF 6, southern arm of the Flanders Cycling Route. Between Antwerp and Mechelen and at the terminus in Brussels there is a connection with the Van Gogh route. In Mechelen there is a connection with the Sint Jacobsroute.
