Cycling on the border of Drenthe and Friesland

From Appelscha you can drive through some beautiful nature reserves in one day. Jump on the saddle for a tour through the Fochteloërveen, the forests around Norg and a piece of the Drents-Friese Wold. Wow!

The Fochteloërveen
Here you will see two characteristic nineteenth-century locks, in between you will pass the strikingly eclectic Reformed Church from 1869. The Fochteloërveen is located on the border of Friesland and Drenthe. This nature reserve is considered one of the few and best preserved raised bog areas in the Netherlands. How quiet it is here! From the lookout tower you have a beautiful panorama.

Esdorp Norg
You will pass the Tonckensborg, a mansion from 1630 that has been inhabited by the Tonckens family since 1742. In Esdorp Norg you pass the old village green. Here you will see, among other things, the thirteenth-century St. Margaret's Church. A little later you cycle through the forests of the Langeloërduinen. In the Prison Museum you will learn more about the history of the Veenhuizen detention village and prison life. The forest on the edge of the Drents-Friese Wold forms the final chord of this route.
