From Horpmaal to Brustem and Heers

Heers is a town in the beautiful province of Limburg in Belgium. The village is best known for its thirteenth-century castle. Heers and the castle were destroyed by the troops of Karel de Stoute in 1467. A farmhouse from Heers was transferred to Bokrijk and rebuilt there as an entrance to the open-air museum. The route is characterized by the presence of two beautiful castles. The village in which Rijkel Castle is located is not large and the town is particularly known in the area for its castle. The building arose from the core of a 16th-century mansion, which is now incorporated in the east wing. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the building was expanded into a U-shaped water castle, which was built in the Brabant baking and sand-lime brick style. The last stop before returning to the starting point of your tour is Chateau De La Motte. This ancient and romantic accommodation offers numerous options for good food and drink. There is a café and a brasserie where you can enjoy a delicious lunch. The dishes are reasonably priced and will taste good when you have already made an effort of cycling for a few kilometers. The romantic terrace is located on the beautiful moat. Don't forget to taste the famous Motte beer here, which is the castle's own beer brand.
