Along the water, through the greenery in Vollenhoeve

In 1918, the Zuiderzee Act was passed, which allowed the start of the Lely plan: the construction and reclamation of the Zuiderzee and the IJsselmeer polders. In the 1940s, the Noordoostpolder was constructed as part of that plan, because the need for agricultural land was great. In the spring, a new sea is created in the Noordoostpolder: a sea of color in the fields. The color combination of many flowers that bloom there is breathtakingly beautiful, but the Noordoostpolder has even more hidden gems. Where the peat soil was too poor to cultivate it properly, forests were planted. As many as 150 kilometers of ditches were dug by hand to drain soil and plant hundreds of thousands of saplings.
