Tour of terp villages and Dokkum from Ternaard

From a long distance you can see characteristic Frisian terp villages on the horizon, such as Wetsens, Metslawier and Hantum. Centuries ago, the sea in the salt marsh landscape left behind more silt in some places than in others: raised areas where it was safe to build. The most famous place in this region is of course the fortified city of Dokkum, founded in 754, one of the Frisian Eleven Cities. Dokkum has a protected cityscape and has more than 140 national monuments. Beautiful buildings are, for example, the town hall of Dokkum from 1610 or the Admiralty House from 1618, which now houses a museum. The ramparts that surround the old town are still intact.
