Description
Explore the banks of the Tjeukemeer (Tjsûkemar), which you will pass during this cycling tour. The northeastern part of this lake is less than a meter deep, but gradually the depth increases. There are three small islands in the lake. Over the centuries, the shape and surface of the Tjeukemeer have changed a lot due to storm tides and drifting ice, but forest and peat fires have also helped the lake to grow in size. At a statue on the lake you can read two folk tales about the origin of the lake. Both stories feature two women and a fire, although the naming of the lake is explained in different ways.
