Tour of Leiden and Kagerplassen

The Kagerplassen form an area where islands and peat lakes alternate. The Kagerplassen are of cultural-historical value because of the characteristic allotment pattern, the striking windmills and the virtual absence of buildings. You see polder windmills here in abundance, they are indispensable to keep this humid area under control. Each island in the lakes has its own mill to grind it dry. The municipality of Kaag en Braassem even has the most windmills (20) within a municipality in the Netherlands. The Vrouw Venne is a seesaw mill from the seventeenth century. You take the ferry to Kagereiland, with the picturesque village of Kaag. After a cup of coffee at Brasserie Coazy on an island in't Joppe, you can make a nice round around the heart of Leiden.
