Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 159152
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Sea, beach, dunes, wind, nature, space and openness: Schouwen-Duiveland has it all. Beautiful views over the water and the wind blowing in the dunes alternate with the flat, vast interior, characteristic villages and friendly hamlets. You follow the coastal strip during the first part of the route and then cycle from village to village. With a bit of luck you will see a bat, and you will probably encounter one or more Shetlands. Those interested in cultural history will also be amazed at the value of Schouwen-Duiveland in this area, because the tour takes you past a beautiful castle. Haamstede Castle is an old castle dating from the thirteenth century. In 1525 the castle was almost completely destroyed by fire, which meant that the castle had to be rebuilt. The current fortress was therefore mainly built in the sixteenth century. The castle was last restored in 1973 and in 1981 it came into the hands of the Association of Natural Monuments. What is special is that the only deciduous forest in Schouwen-Duivenland can be found on the estate of Slot Haamstede.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
