Hanseatic city Deventer is one of the five oldest cities in the Netherlands. Between 1000 and 1500, Deventer developed into a true trading centre. The fact that the city joined the German Hanseatic League obviously had something to do with this. This alliance was intended to promote trade between cities and to offer protection to merchants. The city was an important Hanseatic port city on the IJssel and during the Middle Ages, Deventer attracted merchants from all over Europe to participate in the annual fairs in this city. This is how the current historic city centre with the town square De Brink came into being as the Hanseatic heart of Deventer. De Brink today has a fountain in the middle and many cosy terraces, shady trees and monumental buildings around it. You will also find the characteristic Waag building from the Hanseatic period there, where the Deventer museum is now located. There are also many monumental buildings in the rest of the historic centre of Deventer that are well worth a visit. For example, you will also find the oldest stone house in the Netherlands here.
