The Atlantic Wall Route

Look up tourism in the most famous seaside resort near The Hague: Scheveningen. The village is best known as a coastal region where there is a lot of tourism in the summer. The most characteristic part of Scheveningen can be found near and behind the Oude Kerk. Scheveningen has been hit by storm tides a number of times over the years, which is also the reason why the church is on the edge of the village, instead of in the middle, where it was originally located. The name of the route refers to the 2685 kilometer long defense line that the German occupiers built along the coastline. The Atlantic Wall ran from Norway via Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium to France, all the way to the border with Spain. Defenses were built at strategic places to help prevent an Allied invasion. Many bunkers of the Dutch part of the Atlantic Wall now serve as bat reserves and have therefore received a protected status. Because this route largely follows the coastline, the center of politics does not play a role during this cycling tour, but you can experience the historical value of the Atlantic Wall in the region.
