Description

The route starts at Plaza De Haven. The IJssel flows through the Netherlands as a branch of the Rhine. As you make your way along the winding floodplains of the IJssel, you can enjoy a beautiful coulisse landscape. The IJssel valley runs roughly from Arnhem to Kampen and is a unique area in the Netherlands. Here you will find moist, dark deciduous forest with ferns at the foot of immense trees, but also blue grassland with rare plants and animals. The Wijhese Molen is the oldest still existing octagonal smock mill in Overijssel. The mill, which was built in 1703 and remained in operation until the Second World War, still grinds animal feed on a voluntary basis with one pair of millstones. A congregation of Augustinian canons used to live in Windesheim.
