From Terneuzen to Axel and Hulst

Terneuzen was called 'Ter Nose' in the 12th century and first appears in the archives in 1325.'Ter Nessen\\\' is also mentioned as the original name, where'nesse\\\' means'headland\\\'. Terneuzen, together with Vlissingen, forms the Port of Zeeland, the third port in the Netherlands after Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Art lovers can go to De Scheldeboulevard, where many sculptures are exhibited during the summer season.

In Spui you cycle past the Eben Haezer mill. This round stone mill was built in 1807. The mill is painted white according to Zeeland tradition. It was in use until 1952 and is now out of service. The mill can be visited at regular intervals.

At Axel you cycle along the Axelse creek, one of the largest creeks in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. It is a remnant of a large channel that flowed from the Western Scheldt and flowed back into it via the Hellegat. This open connection was closed with the diking of the Bewesten Blijpolder in 1790. On the banks of the creek you will find narrow reed collars and a number of low-lying, moist meadow areas along the south side. The creek is mainly used as a fishing water.

You cycle through open polder landscape to the picturesque town of Hulst, one of the best preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands. The city is surrounded by city walls: the inner and outer fortress, with a number of city gates and strongholds. The historic center is decorated with countless monuments. The city profiles itself as 'the most Flemish city in the Netherlands' and is known for its gastronomy. You can always enjoy all kinds of culinary delicacies in the many restaurants and on the cozy terraces.
