Cycling route: 157791
Provided by: Groots Genieten
You cycle across the Eeserveld, through the green forests, the vast meadows and along the fens of the De Eese estate. You cross the river Linge and make a short trip to the De Gooyer mill. This polder mill was built in 1775 and was moved twice before it ended up at its current location on the Linde river. The mill is in working order and can usually be visited on Saturdays.
You cycle along the banks of the Linge river to Ossenzijl. There you can visit De Weerribben Nature Activities Center or De Weerribben Outdoor Center. You can view a permanent exhibition that tells you everything about the origins of the nature reserve and its flora and fauna. You can also buy maps, routes and booklets and find information about the center's activities.
The Weerribben-Wieden National Park is the largest peat bog in Western Europe. This water-rich natural landscape with lakes, ditches, reed fields and swamp forests was created by peat extraction: peat was dredged here from the 15th century.
Water is the most determining factor for plants and animals in the Weerribben-Wieden. Many aquatic plants and countless animals live in the calm water and along the banks of the ditches and drainage holes. The otter and the pine marten also occur in the swamp forests and cage forests. The quaking bogs are very special: floating carpets that are just - or just not - passable. Orchids and the very rare red scorpion moss grow there. The flowery meadows and moist grasslands attract a unique flora and fauna and the reedlands are of great importance for birds such as the bluethroat and the bittern.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
