Description
Between Emmen and Ter Apel you drive through quiet old forests and a vast former peat area. You will also pass some sights, such as Klooster Ter Apel.
Museum Monastery
You start the route just outside Emmer-Compascuum. You drive north through the former peat area. You will find plenty of peace and space in this vast landscape. In Roswinkel you can admire the beautiful village church from 1759. A little later you literally cycle a bit across the German-Dutch border. The forests near Ter Apel are planted around 800! You will pass the famous medieval Crosier monastery from 1465, a building that is among the Top 100 of Dutch UNESCO monuments.
Valtherbos
Nieuwe-Weerdinge is a nineteenth-century peat colony with characteristic ribbon village buildings. Valthe shows you the other face of Drenthe: it is a green village with some beautiful old Saxon farms. You can enjoy a nice terrace on one of those farms, namely at Tuinterras Restaurant De Gaffel. There is a hiding place in the Valtherbos that was never discovered by the Germans. In the beautiful center of Emmen you will pass a few more sights, such as the Grote Kerk from 1856.
