Cycling between Emmen and Ter Apel

Between Emmen and Ter Apel, you'll cycle through tranquil old forests and a vast former peatland. You'll also pass several sights, such as Ter Apel Monastery.

Museum Monastery
The route begins just outside Emmer-Compascuum. You'll cycle north through the former peatlands. This expansive landscape offers plenty of peace and tranquility. In Roswinkel, you can admire the beautiful village church dating from 1759. A little later, you'll literally cycle for a short distance across the German-Dutch border. The forests near Ter Apel were planted around 800! You'll pass the famous medieval Crosier Monastery from 1465, a building listed among the Top 100 Dutch UNESCO monuments.

Valtherbos
Nieuwe-Weerdinge is a nineteenth-century peat colony with characteristic ribbon village architecture. Valthe, on the other hand, shows you a different side of Drenthe: it's a village green with several beautiful old Saxon farmhouses. On one of these farmhouses, you can enjoy a pleasant terrace drink at Tuinterras Restaurant De Gaffel. In the Valtherbos forest lies a hiding place that was never discovered by the Germans. In the beautiful center of Emmen, you'll pass several other sights, such as the Grote Kerk (Great Church) from 1856.
