In the Diever area it is wonderful to cycle through picturesque villages and a varied rural area. You also drive through Dwingelderveld National Park.
Sheepfold Geldings
The route starts at Visitor Center Dwingelderveld. You will learn more about the national park here. A little further on is the Schaapskooi Ruinen. If you're early, you can see the shepherd leave with his impressive herd of over 300 Drenthe heath sheep: a unique experience! You drive through the woods into rural Drenthe. The route takes you to the nice Diever. Just outside the village you can make a stopover on the terrace at Landhotel & Restaurant Diever.
Dwingeloo
You then cycle on low-traffic roads to Dwingeloo. Because of the many well-preserved old farms and houses, Dwingeloo enjoys a protected village view. Here you can admire, among other things, the fifteenth-century Sint-Nicolaaskerk. The spire has the striking shape of an onion. Further on you drive back into the woods of the Dwingelderveld. A gem is the vast wet heathland with its almost endless, undisturbed horizon. It is one of the quietest places in the Netherlands.
