Avifauna - Reeuwijkse Plassen

This cycle route goes via Boskoop, past many tree nurseries. The road to the lift bridge is very busy, so be careful! After this you cycle towards Reeuwijk and drive along rustic, narrow country roads past the beautiful houses on the water. The hydrangeas are now in full bloom, a very beautiful sight. Many stops are also possible on this route. For example, I took a break at Cafe-Restauarant het Vaantje (junction 47) and rested on the nice terrace. At junction 14 you pass the Goejanverwellesluis, which connects the Hollandsche IJssel and the Dubbele Wiericke. The hamlet of Goejanverwelle - bordering Hekendorp - is a small village with a well-known history. In 1787, Wilhelmina of Prussia, the wife of Stadtholder William V, was arrested here. In Oudewater, a visit to the Waag should not be missed. In the 16th century, people were weighed here to determine whether or not they were a witch. Those found guilty were burned at the stake. Do you dare to step on the scale? Non-witches receive a certificate. Like all junction routes, this route is also easy to shorten. If you think Oudewater is too far, I advise you to cut off via Boskoop and cycle around the Reeuwijkse plassen. You will discover various meadow and water birds here! In winter, the area is a resting place especially for birds that winter in the Netherlands, such as the wigeon, gadwall, shoveler, little swan and white-fronted goose.
