Cycling route: 157282
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Since the canalization of the Rhine in 1970, the water level from the weir at Hagestein has been influenced by the ebb and flow of the tides for most of the year. Just before Streefkerk, you will pass the Broekmolen, dating from 1581, which was used to drain the polder. You will also visit centuries-old villages, such as Oud-Alblas, Groot-Ammers and Molenaarsgraaf. Wijngaarden is the lowest-lying village in the Alblasserwaard; the village was flooded during the 1953 flood disaster. You will also cycle through Nieuwpoort. This old fortified town has an illustrious history. After 1672, the town became part of the Old Dutch Waterline. The historic center has been beautifully preserved.
