Cycling on the Altweerterheide

On the Altweerderheide you will find a few farms that were built here in the twentieth century. The area was therefore only reclaimed relatively late. The village of Altweerterheide is still not large, with a few dozen families living there. Those looking for peace and space, but still don't want to be completely cut off from civilization, will get their money's worth during this bike tour.

Further south, at the Tungelerwallen, you will see many more special insects. Between the planted pine trees and the dry pieces of heath you can help yourself with nature management. Natuurmonumenten is looking for volunteers to, for example, saw trees or clean up in designated places. When you are so busy in nature, it is striking that the ant lion and various digging wasps such as the large caterpillar killer and the bee wolf mainly occur in the open spaces. Where the terrain of drifting sand changes into a heathland, many lichens grow, such as the gray serpent, pear moss, rough maidenhair and the rare Icelandic moss. In autumn, these mosses give beautiful colors to the environment.
