Description
The Deurnese Peel and the Mariapeel are the remains of what was once an inhospitable raised bog area. Because peat was very valuable as a fuel, it was called 'the black gold of the Peel'. Reclamation of the area began in the Middle Ages. The area used to be inhospitable, but now it is a bird-rich nature reserve.
Plenty of birds to spot
This cycle route takes you through this beautiful nature reserve where you can spot special birds such as the bluethroat, the grasshopper warbler, the shoveler, the pochard, the curlew, the water rail and the teal. During the migration season you can also see cranes here and in winter Taigar bean geese live here. Furthermore, on this route you cycle past the monument'Traces that remained\\\' Kronenberg. This monument was built to commemorate boys and men from De Peel and Kronenberg who were deported for forced labor.
Goats in the sheepfold
On this route you also cycle past a sheepfold. You would think that this restored building from 1800 would house a flock of sheep, but nothing could be further from the truth. This sheepfold is inhabited by a herd of Dutch land goats. These animals graze the heath together with a herd of cattle. In this way they ensure that this area is maintained in a natural way without certain crops becoming too dominant.
