Description

Enjoy cycling through the interior of the province of Zeeland. In the middle of a sea clay landscape, in a patchwork of polders with an agricultural overtone, you will find the town of Oostburg. Surrounding it are creek areas full of orchids and grasslands that traditionally belonged to the noble House of Hemptinne. Oostburg is a modern town and historical buildings can be counted on one hand, but that makes the remaining mansions extra special. Interesting sights mainly date from the mid-twentieth century: the Protestant Church and the 55-metre-high water tower were built in 1950, the Eligius Church dates from 1949 and the Town Hall was opened in 1957. The mills you encounter along the way are older. Take, for example, the Luteyn mill (body/remains), which defines the atmosphere of the village of Nieuwvliet. Although the mill has been dismantled, the body of the mill still stands stately on the Mettenijedijk as a national monument. The Luteyn was once a tower mill in full regalia. The former corn mill was built in 1859, but was dismantled in 1923. The first is a stone's throw from the restaurant in Zuidzande. The round stone belt mill was built in 1874 and functioned as a corn mill. The mill is fully operational and is now operated on a voluntary basis and can only be visited by appointment. The De Meermin mill (hull/remains) looks very different and is hardly recognizable as such. The mill from 1896 was also once used as a corn mill, but was dismantled in 1948, because it was destroyed by war violence in 1944. The stone body is heavily overgrown with ivy, and instead of the mill cap and sails, a weather vane adorns it. And finally, the De Brak mill presents itself. The round stone tower mill from 1739 is a beautiful sight and can also be visited from the inside between Easter and October. The mill, which stands on a mill belt and therefore seems even higher, is the first stone mill of Sluis. The facade stone above the door refers to the fact that the mill is named after an old breed of dog.
