The old cultural landscape around Markelo

Your route starts at Vakantiepark Buitencentrum Hessenheem. You drive through Markelo, Goor, Hengevelde and Diepenheim and will not be able to take it all in. The landscape around Markelo is slightly hilly and is characterised by rolling eskers and five hills. The town has dozens of national monuments, including farms, outbuildings, manors and burial grounds. Watermill Den Haller is located on the Diepenheimse Molenbeek. It is probably the oldest existing watermill in the Netherlands: the corn mill was first mentioned in 1169. Huis Pekkedam or Peckedam was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. The old country house was demolished in 1826 and in 1898 the current villa, which belongs to the Nijenhuis estate, was built on that site. Stop off in Bentelo at Spoolder Proeven & Proosten!
