Description

Cycling is beautiful in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. You drive on car-free roads and dikes through vast polders and along creeks. You will see many sights in the historic villages and towns.

Beautiful Cadzand
The route starts in Retranchement. This former legionary site is a remnant of a fortification constructed by Prince Maurits in 1604. The village is still surrounded by a wall with three bastions. In Cadzand you will see some beautiful old buildings, such as the thirteenth-century Maria Church. De Nooit Gedacht is a flour mill from 1898. Just before the North Sea you pass the Verdronken Zwarte Polder, a nature reserve with dunes and shrubs.

Cultural history
You cycle a bit along the beach: get a breath of fresh air, while enjoying the sound of the surf and the view of the sea. Then you ride along the Zwartegatse Kreek that was created after the damming of the Zwarte Gat inlet in 1602. Oostburg, Aardenburg and Sluis are picturesque towns where you will see plenty of monumental buildings. What a beautiful region!
