Through this route you explore the rolling landscape in the southeast of the province of West Flanders. From the hilltops you have a beautiful view over the old agricultural area with its characteristic farms and picturesque villages. Here you cycle in a region that lies between the rivers the Leie and the Scheldt. First you pass through Wortegem, a village that belongs to the province of East Flanders. Then you cycle into West Flanders towards the old textile city of Waregem. Just below the city is the Flanders Field American Cemetery, the only cemetery in Belgium where American soldiers who fought in the First World War are buried. The soldiers died during the Battle of the Scheldt in early November 1918, less than two weeks before the end of the Great War. From the market you can drive into Stationsstraat to admire the Casier park and the neoclassical castle of the same name from 1852. The route takes you further through characteristic villages such as Vichte and Anzegem. You also pass through Ingooigem, a name that is said to come from the Germanic Ingwihaheim. This village is also called Yvegem by the local residents. In the Stijn Streuvelsstraat you will pass the Lijsternest, the former home of the Flemish writer Stijn Streuvels (1871-1969). After a thorough restoration, this house will be open again as a museum from April to September. The house, including the library and its contents, are a protected monument. The village of Kaster is undoubtedly known to cycling enthusiasts as the Hell of Kaster. This is due to the Varentstraat, a cobblestone street that sometimes separated the wheat from the chaff in cycling races such as the Tour of Flanders. You pass it right by, so anyone who wants to venture on this infamous road will have to make a short excursion.
