Lelystad, Flevoland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 153203

Flevoland is a true piece of art in the long history of the battle that the Netherlands waged against the water. Where the waves of the Zuiderzee once rose high, you now drive across a wide polder landscape.
Nature Park Lelystad was created in the 1970s as a recreational area for the residents of Lelystad. You can admire a reconstructed prehistoric settlement and a shipwreck from the nineteenth century.
Throughout Flevoland you will see blue and white poles scattered across the landscape with a red ship in the top. Each pole marks one of the more than four hundred sites of ships that once sailed the tamed Zuiderzee! You could say that Flevoland is one of the largest dry ship graveyards in the world. And a great archaeological treasure trove.
Along the green edge of the Veluwemeer you drive through the Harderbos, among other things. Thanks to the fertile clay soil, the trees here grow so fast that they seem a lot older than they really are. You cross the Veluwemeer twice for a trip to Gelderland. From the polder roads on the Gelderse shore of the Veluwemeer you have a wonderful view over meadows and watercourses, but you can also see the forests of Flevoland and the Veluwe on the horizon.
Pay a visit to the fishing town of Elburg.
