Description

After a cup of coffee at Fiets En Wandelcafé'T Groene Woud, east of Boxtel and north of Liempde, you put on your walking shoes. Today you will explore the Geelders, a varied nature reserve with coppice banks, deciduous forest, poplar forest, farmland and also heathland. From 1314 to 1802 it was part of a large area for joint use by the farmers of the surrounding villages. Carthusians used the area for oak coppicing in the seventeenth century. The name Geelders probably comes from'gelde\\\', which means low and wet area. It is a loam forest, a forest on loam soil so that moisture does not quickly disappear. This is one of the most important wet forest areas in the Netherlands. Tawny owls and stone martens hide in the hollows of trees. The honey buzzard also lives here.
