Walking tour of Het Leesten

Het Leesten is a beautiful nature reserve near Apeldoorn. Take a look at the Staatsbosbeheer information center before you start. In the area you will encounter traces of iron mining. The iron pits in Het Leesten were created in the Middle Ages by the extraction of chatterstones: a ball of loam with a layer of iron ore around it. The iron in the soil prevents the water from sinking into the Salamandergat, a heathland where many salamanders live. Water is scarce on these high sandy soils, which is why game often comes here. You see many scouring areas of wild boars, where there are always a few bristly hairs hanging from the trunks.
