Hasselt, Flanders, Belgium
Cycling route: 151231
Provided by: Groots Genieten
On this tour between the towns of Hasselt and Halen you cycle from village to village through the Flemish arable landscape. You drive through the valley of the Herk river and pass small chapels. On the horizon you see wind turbines turning majestically.
One of the many large and small places you will visit on your route is Halen. During the First World War, the Battle of the Silver Helmets took place here in 1914, over the bridge over the Gete River. A museum in the municipality commemorates that battle. Halen is located in the Hagenland, a very hilly area.
You also pass through Herk-de-Stad. The medieval city is still clearly recognizable by the spacious market square and the egg-shaped pattern of the city walls. This wall can still be seen in the pattern of avenues that now form the ring road around the city center.
